Timber Decking Design and Installation
We can provide advice on all timber decking including design, structural engineering issues, site preparation, maintenance, finishes and of course, the installation itself.
Where the shape, size or styling of timber decking is concerned, practically anything is possible - in so far as budget will allow. However, there will be structural considerations, especially relating to safety - like whether it is to be elevated, or how it will cope with any number of people at a summer barbecue or party. Gardenleave have the experience to cope with these issues
Timber decks look good almost anywhere. Decking design elements you may like to consider are whether you want a sunny area for lounging or a private shady spot for entertaining, or what style of deck will suit your home - whether detached or semi-detached, old or new. You may also have ideas about whether you want steps, balustrades, trellis work, seating or other features built into your deck.
Timber Decking Durability & Finish
For long life, timber decking should be built from naturally durable timber or from wood that has been industrially pressure treated.
A majority of timber decking is constructed from high quality pressure-treated softwoods or hardwoods, and some are also ready supplied pre-treated with water repellent. These modern treatments mean that the timber lasts for over 25 years. However, to maintain the superb aesthetic appeal of a timber deck for such a time it will need periodic cleaning and any decorative finishes, such as staining, or water repellents will need occasional refreshing.
The surface of deck boards themselves can be plain, grooved or ribbed.
The durability of timber decking will, to some extent, also depend on which of the many species of suitable woods is used. Here, Gardenleave can offer the best advice and guidance.
Timber Decking Maintenance
The degree of maintenance required depends on the deck specification. The timber used by Gardenleave requires no further preservative treatment and it will resist decay almost indefinitely. A water repellent coating, however, will improve deck performance and prevent cracking. Water repellents can be applied every other year - preferably at the end of a dry summer, while stains will need to be refreshed periodically, usually depending on location, amount of sun received and so on. It is important that a deck is cleaned, by brush or spray, at least once a year - preferably in spring - with a view to removing dirt and moss which will discolour any surface exposed to the weather.
